Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has justified his decision not to back his former deputy, Philip Shaibu, as his successor.
In an interview with Channels Television, Obaseki stated that the political dynamics in Edo State did not favor Shaibu’s gubernatorial aspirations. He cited the state’s power-sharing arrangement as a crucial factor in his decision.
“I made it very clear that the odds were not in his favor in terms of succeeding me,” Obaseki said. “I could not take any risk on his ambition because I have to protect the Edo people.”
Obaseki’s decision has raised questions about his loyalty to his former ally. However, the governor maintains that he acted in the best interests of Edo State.
Meanwhile, Shaibu has condemned his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly as an attack on democracy. He claims that the move was motivated by his political ambitions, particularly his intention to run for governor in 2024 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
