Prosecutors in the historic hush money trial against former President Donald Trump allege that he illegally interfered in the 2016 election by suppressing negative stories about his personal life.
“This was a conspiracy to influence the election by illegally silencing those with damaging information about Trump,” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo said. “It was election fraud, pure and simple.”
Trump’s defense attorney, Todd Blanche, dismissed the case as baseless and accused the prosecution’s key witness of lying. “Trump is innocent. He committed no crimes,” Blanche asserted.
Strikingly, Blanche argued that “there’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election – it’s called democracy.”
The trial, the first of four criminal prosecutions against Trump, marks a significant milestone in American history. Prosecutors emphasize the gravity of the alleged election interference, highlighting payments to a porn actress who claimed to have had an encounter with Trump.
“Trump orchestrated a criminal scheme to corrupt the election and then lied in business records to cover it up,” Colangelo stated.
Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison. While a conviction would not bar him from running for office again, it would prevent him from pardoning himself if found guilty. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing. CONTINUE READING
