On April 20, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu broke his silence on the Ondo 2024 governorship election, reportedly endorsing Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.
Despite initially staying neutral, Tinubu faced pressure from fellow governors within the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) to support Aiyedatiwa’s reelection bid. This has effectively ended the 21-year governorship aspirations of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who had previously sought Tinubu’s endorsement.
The APC primary election, set for today in Akure, will feature 16 cleared candidates. The battle for delegates’ votes is expected to be intense, particularly in Ondo South senatorial district, which accounts for 14 of the contestants.
The cleared aspirants include:

* Wale Akinterinwa (former Finance Commissioner)
* Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin (former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives)
* Prof. Francis Faduyile (former NMA President and ex-Special Adviser on Health)
* Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke (APC National Vice Chairman South-West)
* Chief Olusola Oke, SAN (two-term governorship aspirant)
* Hon. Gbenga Edema (former OSOPADEC Chairman)
* Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim (Senator representing Ondo South)
* Brig. Gen. Olamide Ohunyeye (retired Army Officer)
* Hon. Jimi Odimayo (House of Representatives member)
* Diran Iyantan (former NPC commissioner)
* Ife Oyedele (Executive Secretary of Niger Delta Power Holdings)
* Mr. Soji Ehinlawo
* Mrs. Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo
* Morayo Lebi
* Mrs. Funke Omogoroye
The APC has adopted direct primaries, which will be held across the state’s 18 local government areas.
