Seven Almajiris, young students attending Malam Dan-umma Qurnic School in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi, have tragically lost their lives in a borrow pit collapse.
Malam Dan-umma, the school’s proprietor, confirmed the incident to reporters at his residence. He recounted that the students had been assigned to gather clay and gravel from a nearby hill to repair holes in their rooms before the rainy season. However, a massive chunk of the hill suddenly collapsed, burying them alive.
“Today is one of the saddest days of my life,” Dan-umma lamented. “I rushed to the scene and found seven of them dead. One survivor was taken to the hospital.”
The bodies of the deceased students were transported to the Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi before being released to their families for burial.
Zayyanu Sanka, a local resident and Special Adviser to Governor Nasir Idris, expressed his condolences over the tragedy. He indicated that the government would consider banning excavation on hillsides to prevent similar incidents in the future. CONTINUE READING
