On Monday, April 22, Russia announced the capture of Novomykhailivka, a village in eastern Ukraine. The development raises concerns among Ukrainian officials about the escalating situation on the frontlines.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed in a statement that troops had “completely liberated” Novomykhailivka, located approximately 20 kilometers from Vugledar, which Russian forces have been attempting to seize.
Moscow also reported progress towards Chasiv Yar, a fortified town and artillery base for the Ukrainian army. The Defense Ministry stated that forces had “improved the situation along the front line” by capturing Bohdanivka, just 5 kilometers east of Chasiv Yar.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with military officials to discuss the situation in Chasiv Yar and receive updates from the frontlines. He emphasized the urgent need for US aid, urging Congress to approve the $60 billion bill.
“We are preparing for an offensive,” Zelensky stated. “We hope to hold our ground with timely weapons delivery. We will repel the enemy and thwart Russia’s planned full-scale offensive.”
Russia downplayed the significance of the US aid package, claiming it would not alter the situation on the ground. “Russia’s armed forces are consolidating their positions,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. “The aid and weapons will only lead to more Ukrainian casualties.” CONTINUE READING
