Civil society organizations, led by the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR), have condemned the lack of progress in the investigation into the murder of Sherriff Ishola Salami, a youth leader in Ajiranland, Lagos State.
Salami, who actively opposed land-grabbing in his community, was shot and killed on April 18, 2023, while attending a social event.
Despite a petition to the Lagos State Government, House of Assembly, Commissioner of Police, and Inspector General of Police, CHSR President Comrade Alex Omotehinse lamented that the police have yet to conduct an investigation.
“The family has been left to mourn without any hope of justice,” said Omotehinse. “The silence of those responsible for public accountability is reprehensible and criminal.”
The groups denounced the inaction of the police, accusing them of deliberately frustrating the investigation and denying justice to Salami’s family.
“We demand that the suspected masterminds and accomplices in the murder of Mr. Sheriff Ishola Salami be investigated,” they stated. “The family deserves closure and the community deserves justice.”
The statement added that Salami’s mother passed away from trauma after his death, and his wife and daughters remain without reassurance that justice will be served. CONTINUE READING
