Despite Governor Alex Otti’s initial reluctance to delve into the controversies surrounding his predecessor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the revelation of alleged financial irregularities has prompted a response.
Otti emphasizes that the focus of his administration was to address the pressing issues facing Abia State and avoid distractions. However, he believes it is crucial to understand the underlying problems to prevent their recurrence.
Regarding the alleged misuse of funds for the non-existent airport project and other non-existent contracts, Otti cites a forensic audit as the basis for his claims. He challenges Ikpeazu’s accusations of falsehood, stating that the evidence is irrefutable.
To illustrate Ikpeazu’s inconsistencies, Otti cites several instances where he made public commitments that were not fulfilled. For example, Ikpeazu pledged to use bailout funds solely for salary arrears but failed to do so. He also promised to use Paris Club refunds to pay salaries and pensions but left significant liabilities unpaid.
Otti further points to Ikpeazu’s former Commissioner for Finance, Obinna Oriaku, who admitted to owing pension arrears of 10 months despite enhanced allocations. This, Otti argues, contradicts Ikpeazu’s claims of financial prudence.
Otti defines the “Little Man” as someone who lacks integrity and engages in questionable actions. He cites Ikpeazu’s boast about giving pregnant women N500 and his claims of attracting foreign investments such as “Chicken Republic and Domino’s Pizza” as examples of this behavior.
