Man Released After Being Held In Edo Prison For Four Years Without A Case File

Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, has released an awaiting trial inmate, Saliu Akande, who had been charged with rape and spent four years in the Auchi Medium Security Correctional Centre without a case file.

During a visit to the prison to alleviate congestion and promote speedy trials, Justice Okungbowa noted that Section 470 (2) of the Edo State Administration of Law 2018 empowers the court to ensure swift resolution of criminal matters and reduce case backlog.

“Since taking office, I have collaborated with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee to prioritize our mandate,” he stated. “I am firmly committed to ensuring that no one is detained beyond what the law requires.” CONTINUE READING
