The Delta State Police Command has apprehended a 32-year-old man, Ernest Okemute, for allegedly assaulting Precious Ekarume, his pregnant girlfriend, in the Orokpor community of Ughelli North Local Government Area.
According to a Facebook post by activist Kelvin Ejumudo, the suspect beat Ekarume with a belt and stick after she refused to abort her pregnancy. Ejumudo alleges that Okemute had threatened to harm Ekarume even if it resulted in her death.
“Violence against women is Prohibited!” Ejumudo wrote. “One Mr Ernest Okemute 32 years old has beaten his girlfriend, Miss Precious Ekarume in Orokpor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta state.”
Ejumudo claims that Ekarume contacted him with the assistance of community leaders, prompting him to intervene. He collaborated with the Area Commander of the Ughelli Police Division, ACP Ademola Adebayor, who dispatched officers to apprehend the suspect.
Okemute is currently detained at the Ughelli Area Command Police cell and is expected to face charges in court shortly.
“We have a law in Delta state called Violence Against persons act 2022,” Ejumudo emphasized. “Hence nobody has the monopoly of violence on any other person within the state.”
