Two Ukrainian soldiers, 36-year-old Volodymr Kozin and 26-year-old Vicheslav Bezuhlyi, have been tragically killed in a stabbing attack in Murnau am Stafelsee, Germany. The incident occurred while the soldiers were on leave from medical rehabilitation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
According to German police, a 57-year-old Russian national has been arrested as a suspect in connection with the double murder. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed the deaths of the soldiers and expressed condolences to their families. The ministry stated that the victims were undergoing medical treatment in Germany as part of the rehabilitation process.
Bavaria’s Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, said that the investigation into the killings is ongoing. It is not yet known whether the suspect and the victims were acquainted.
A small vigil was held at the shopping center where the attack occurred. Mourners gathered to lay flowers, candles, and a Ukrainian flag in memory of the slain soldiers.
Germany has welcomed over a million Ukrainian refugees since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022. The country also has a sizeable Russian immigrant community, including 2.5 million Russians of German ancestry who settled in Germany after the fall of the Soviet Union.
