The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of all police officers assigned to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has placed Bello on its watchlist following an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declaration that he is wanted in connection with an alleged N80.2 billion money laundering case. The EFCC had sought to arrest Bello on Wednesday, but the attempt was thwarted by a group of armed men and police officers.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a warrant of arrest for Bello, along with three other suspects. They were scheduled to be arraigned on 19 counts of money laundering, but Bello’s arrest was prevented by the intervention of the current Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo.
The IGP’s order for the withdrawal of police officers from Bello was communicated in a police wireless message dated Friday. The message states that all officers attached to Bello should be withdrawn with immediate effect.
The NIS circular regarding Bello’s placement on the watchlist provides details such as his name, nationality, and passport number. It instructs immigration officials to arrest and refer Bello to the Director of Investigation if he is spotted at any entry or exit point.
