Pa Onakoya, the father of Nigerian chess prodigy Tunde Onakoya, has candidly admitted that he initially resisted his son’s pursuit of chess. In a recent interview, he recalled that he often interrupted Tunde’s games as a child, urging him to prioritize his education.
“I didn’t realize that chess would be the catalyst for his phenomenal success,” Pa Onakoya confessed. “I had envisioned him becoming a doctor.”
However, his perspective has since shifted dramatically. Tunde’s recent Guinness World Record achievement, where he played the longest chess marathon ever at 60 hours, has filled him with immense pride.
“Babatunde Onakoya is an extraordinary child,” Pa Onakoya said. “Once he sets his mind to something, he accomplishes it with unwavering determination.”
Reflecting on his initial reservations, Pa Onakoya now strongly encourages parents to support their children’s passions. “Don’t discourage them from pursuing what they love,” he advised. “You never know where it might lead.”
Tunde Onakoya’s record-breaking feat has not only brought him international recognition but has also inspired countless young people to embrace their dreams and strive for greatness. CONTINUE READING
