Amidst the outcry over Alhaji Danjuma Binkola’s intended installation as the “Garkuwan Hausawan” in Benin, the self-styled monarch has sought forgiveness from the revered Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
Binkola’s announcement that he would be bestowed with the title on May 5, 2024, sparked immediate backlash from the Benin Traditional Council and indigenes who deemed it a violation of the kingdom’s hallowed traditions.
Recognizing the gravity of his actions, Binkola has now tendered an apology to the Oba. In a widely circulated video, he kneels before the monarch, pleading for pardon.
Speaking in Pidgin English, Binkola expressed his ignorance about the significance of the proposed installation and the “Garkuwan Hausawan Benin.” He stated that he was born and raised in Edo State, as was his father, Alhaji Garuba.
“I did not understand the implications of my actions. The person who was to confer the title told me I would assist him in managing the Hausa community in Edo State and report to the palace,” he said in the video.
