The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has threatened to seek the assistance of the Nigerian Military to arrest former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
On Wednesday, the EFCC attempted to apprehend Bello at his Abuja residence but encountered resistance. Reports indicate that Bello may have sought refuge in the Kogi State Government House, protected by the immunity granted to his successor, Governor Ahmed Ododo, under Section 308 of the Constitution.
The EFCC has been pursuing Bello for alleged financial misconduct during his tenure. He was scheduled for arraignment on Thursday, but his absence prevented the proceedings.
EFCC Counsel Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, informed the court that the commission would not hesitate to employ the military to apprehend Bello, regardless of his hiding place.
“We may have to invite the military to remove Yahaya Bello from his hiding spot,” Pinheiro stated. “Immunity does not extend to his current location.”
The EFCC’s determination to bring Bello to justice underscores its commitment to combating financial crimes and holding public officials accountable for their actions.
