The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally served fraud charges against former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello through his attorney.
Despite being declared wanted by the EFCC, Bello has avoided public appearances, fearing arrest. He has yet to appear in court personally.
Bello’s lawyer, Adeola Adedipe (SAN), has requested that the arrest warrant be revoked until the court determines the validity of the accusations.
The EFCC announced Bello’s fugitive status on social media platforms. The charges were presented to Bello on April 23 as ordered by the court.
Adedipe argued that it is inappropriate to arrest someone before they are indicted and convicted, stating that “the court is expected to do justice at all times.”
The court ruled that Bello should receive his charges through his counsel since he has consistently failed to appear in court.
The EFCC opposed the request to revoke the arrest warrant, alleging it was an attempt to delay the trial.
Prosecuting counsel Kemi Piniero (SAN) emphasized the seriousness of the charges, amounting to N80.2 billion. He urged the court to dismiss the defendant’s request until he appears in person.
“He cannot be in his house while the trial proceeds without him coming here to take his plea,” Piniero argued. “This is a criminal matter, and he must come and take his plea.” CONTINUE READING
