Drama As Elderly Father Slumps, Dies While Trying To Bail Sons At Police Station

Alhaji Muftau Mohammed, a resident of Gbeganu Area in Minna, Niger State, met an untimely demise at Morris Police Division while attempting to secure the release of his sons, Mubarak Ahmed and Yusuf Mohammed.

According to Mubarak and Yusuf, the police apprehended them around 11pm on Wednesday while they were sleeping in a burglary outside their home due to the intense heat. “We were lying down when police vehicles approached and asked us what we were doing outside,” Yusuf recounted. “We told them we were sleeping because of the heat. They forced open the burglary and took us to the station.”

Upon their arrival at Morris Police Division, their phones were confiscated and they were detained in a cell. “About 20 minutes later, I heard my father’s voice outside,” Yusuf said. “He was shouting for water, but then I heard nothing. I asked the officers what was happening, but they refused to tell me.”

Dauda Jimo, a neighbor who accompanied Alhaji Mohammed to the police station, confirmed that the deceased had high blood pressure and was prone to severe headaches when awakened abruptly. “When his sons were taken away by the police, he called me to bring him to the station,” Jimo explained. “He complained of a severe headache and asked for water, but we couldn’t find any nearby. He then collapsed, and we used a confiscated tricycle to take him to the hospital.”

However, their efforts to seek medical assistance were met with disappointment. “We went to several clinics, but they were closed,” Jimo said. “We eventually encountered a police van and informed them of the situation. They took us to Minna General Hospital, where Alhaji Mohammed was pronounced dead.”

Another neighbor, Alhaji Ahmad Abdullahi, witnessed the aftermath of the tragedy. “Alhaji Mohammed’s wife fainted when she heard the news of his death,” Abdullahi said. “She tried to walk to the police station, but she collapsed and had to be revived.”

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances and any potential negligence. CONTINUE READING
