Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods that devastated homes in Kamuchiri Village, Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, resulting in a grim death toll. Authorities have confirmed the retrieval of at least 40 bodies from the debris.
According to Naivasha Police Commander Stephen Kirui, “We have recovered 40 bodies so far, and many more remain buried in the mud.” Rescue teams also found five vehicles trapped in the mud, but the bodies have been retrieved.
Officials at the mortuary reported receiving 42 bodies. Rescue efforts continue, and officials anticipate the death toll to rise.
Tragically, numerous individuals are still missing following the disaster. Over 100 people were rushed to hospitals with injuries. The incident also claimed the lives of domestic animals.
The rescue operation is being hindered by the treacherous conditions created by the floodwaters. According to the Kenya Red Cross, the flood originated from a nearby river that burst its banks on Sunday night.
“Several individuals have been transported to a medical facility in Mai Mahiu due to flash floods impacting Kamuchiri Village,” the Red Cross stated.
The incident severed the main road connecting Nairobi and Mai Mahiu, as large amounts of rocks, mud, and logs blocked the route. Motorists were stranded for hours as emergency responders worked to clear the road. Police advised motorists to avoid the area.
Heavy rains continue to affect various regions of the country, prompting calls for caution. Teams from the Kenya Police, County Disaster team, Kenya Red Cross, and local residents are collaborating on the rescue effort.
The government has postponed the scheduled school reopening to Monday, May 6, 2024, due to the ongoing rainfall.
