Organized Labour has announced that the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage is expected to begin by the end of August.
According to Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission, the slight delay in implementation is attributed to necessary processes, including the “consequential adjustment” involving wage calculations from level one to level 16.
Ndubuaku emphasized that the delay is not an attempt to avoid payment by the government. He explained, “Signing the wage is just a small component. The consequential adjustment involves calculating the minimum wage for each level and step, which takes time.”
The process involves collaboration between the government and Organized Labour through an established committee. Ndubuaku expressed confidence that the adjustments would be completed before the end of the month.
This update follows the signing of the N70,000 minimum wage bill into law by President Bola Tinubu. While some states have yet to implement the law, others have established committees to facilitate its implementation.
