The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken into custody All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ondo State, Wale Akinterinwa.
Akinterinwa’s detention stems from an ongoing investigation into his tenure as Commissioner for Finance during the previous Akeredolu administration. He served in this role for over seven years until the dissolution of the State Executive Council by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who succeeded the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Sources indicate that Akinterinwa is being investigated for alleged mismanagement of billions of Naira. Despite participating in the weekend primary election from detention, the EFCC maintains that the timing of his detention is solely its prerogative.
According to sources, Akinterinwa was initially invited by the anti-graft agency several weeks ago for questioning, but reportedly declined due to “being too busy.” He eventually presented himself at the EFCC office on Thursday.
The EFCC has remained discreet about Akinterinwa’s detention to avoid influencing the APC primary. A confidential source stated that Akinterinwa had been unresponsive to previous summons.
“The commission could have declared him wanted, but we exercised restraint to avoid being perceived as interfering in politics given his status as an aspirant,” the source said.
As of yesterday, Akinterinwa remained in EFCC custody. The agency emphasized that his detention is not politically motivated, stating that he voluntarily responded to their invitation and is currently being questioned. CONTINUE READING
