The Chinese supermarket in Abuja that sparked outrage for denying entry to Nigerians has closed its doors.
On Monday, a reporter visited the supermarket and found it locked with an anti-theft padlock.
Previously, Nigerians had condemned the supermarket’s discriminatory policy, which restricted access to Chinese citizens only.
The supermarket, located at the China General Chamber of Commerce, was known for selling Chinese cuisine and beverages.
A security guard at the gate confirmed that management had implemented the policy at the beginning of the year without explanation.
“They have stopped everything. They are selling, but our people should stop coming. Only Chinese are allowed to shop here,” the guard said.
The guard added that Nigerians had been allowed to shop at the supermarket throughout 2022 but were suddenly banned in January.
“We don’t know the reason, but we have told them to remove their adverts from the internet so people won’t come,” the guard said.
However, the reporter was granted entry on Sunday, which the guard attributed to “grace.”
Inside the supermarket, food, drinks, and essentials were displayed on shelves without price tags.
An attendant expressed surprise that a Nigerian had been allowed in, speculating that it was because the reporter did not arrive by car.
On Monday, the reporter returned and was granted access by a different security guard without question.
Attempts to gather information from passersby about the closure were unsuccessful.
Heavy security was present on the street leading to the supermarket. CONTINUE READING
