Legio Maria Church, an African-initiated faith among the Luo community in western Kenya, has recently drawn attention for its unique beliefs and practices.
Followers firmly assert their exclusivity in attaining heaven and employ a distinctive ritual involving the removal of six lower teeth, purportedly to aid divine recognition in the afterlife and avert damnation.
Central to their faith is Baba Simeo Lodvikus Melkio, revered as the eternal spiritual leader and a figure akin to a black messiah, believed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ in African form. The movement, while bearing similarities to Catholicism, distinguishes itself with its fervent devotion to Mary, whom they honor as ‘queen’ and ‘mother.’
However, public reaction to these revelations has been mixed, with some dismissing Legio Maria as lacking legitimacy. Skepticism abounds online, with commentators questioning the rationale behind such practices and expressing doubt about the faith’s authenticity.
