In response to the recent announcement by the Bola Tinubu government approving a salary increase for civil servants in six Consolidated Salary Structures, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its concerns.
The salary increase, which ranges from 25% to 35%, will take effect from January 1, 2024. The affected structures include:
* Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS)
* Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS)
* Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS)
* Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS)
* Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS)
* Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS)
NLC spokesman, Comrade Benson Upah, welcomed the increase but emphasized the need to extend it to all categories of civil servants. He noted that the pay rise only benefits certain categories of workers in the public service.
“While we appreciate the government’s gesture, we strongly believe it should be extended to other categories of Civil Servants who are in lower cadre and are more vulnerable,” Upah said.
He also expressed concern over the rising cost of living, which has made it challenging for Nigerian workers to afford basic necessities such as transportation, education, and healthcare.
“Workers are yearning for better days, with a better life, better electricity, better infrastructure, and enhanced salary,” Upah added.
The NLC is urging the government to ensure that the salary increase is reflective of the harsh economic conditions faced by Nigerian workers. CONTINUE READING
