The globally renowned Afrobeats sensation, David Adeleke, affectionately known as Davido, recently disclosed that his stage name was bestowed upon him by his father.

During an interview, the singer revealed that Adedeji Adeleke initially had reservations before fully supporting his musical aspirations.

The multi-award-winning artist recounted how his father, upon hearing one of his songs on the radio, began referring to him as “Davido.”

“I don’t perceive my dad as strict. I gained prominence at the age of 17. Imagine a 17-year-old and you couldn’t get through to him; my dad was the sole parent,” Davido shared. “As I mentioned, I am the pioneer entertainer in my family. I believe he didn’t oppose my music career; he simply wanted me to succeed.”

“When I returned to Nigeria, he wasn’t aware. Then, upon hearing my voice on the radio, exclaiming ‘Davido,’ he bestowed that name upon me. My dad bestowed upon me the name Davido… He simply desired for me to pursue education, which I eventually did.”

In 2023, Davido disclosed that his father became increasingly protective of him following his mother’s passing. He also shed light on his father’s influence on his financial choices.

Davido catapulted to stardom with his 2012 smash hit ‘Dami Duro’ and has since amassed numerous awards and accolades for his musical prowess.
