The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to the United States’ 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, which acknowledged that Nigeria’s recent general election generally reflected the popular will despite irregularities.
Nze Chidi Duru, Deputy National Organizing Secretary of the APC, welcomed the report but emphasized that the party does not require external validation for the election’s outcome. He stated that the elections are “now behind us” and that the party is focused on developing Nigeria’s electoral democracy.
Duru pointed out that elected officials at all levels are in place and that any election disputes have been adjudicated by the courts. He added that the APC believes in continuous improvement and will support INEC’s efforts to enhance the electoral process.
“As we progress on our democratic path, we aim to conduct elections that genuinely reflect the will of Nigerians,” Duru said. “Therefore, while this report is welcomed, we do not require external validation. The 2023 elections have been concluded, and those elected have assumed office.”
Duru reiterated the party’s commitment to working with INEC to improve future electoral processes and ensure the integrity of Nigerian democracy.
