The federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, is proposing a new minimum wage of N150,000 to N200,000 for organized sector workers.
The government has scheduled meetings with organized labor leaders at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to discuss the proposed wage. Labor unions have been advocating for a living wage that can sustain workers amidst rising living costs.
According to a letter from the Permanent Secretary to the SGF, the purpose of the meetings is to “deliberate and agree on the government position on the new minimum wage.”
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had initially proposed a minimum wage of N794,000, while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) proposed N447,000. However, the unions later submitted a joint proposal of N615,000, citing economic challenges.
Sources within the SGF office indicate that the government is considering a range of N150,000 to N200,000, which will be presented to the tripartite committee for further negotiation. CONTINUE READING
