The Federal High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja has issued a bench warrant ordering the arrest of former National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILS) Director General, Professor Ladi Aisha Hamalai.
The warrant was issued on Monday, April 22, 2024, by Hon. Justice C. O. Oba, following Professor Hamalai’s repeated failure to appear in court for a corruption case filed against her by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
According to ICPC spokesperson Mr. Demola Bakare, this is the fourth consecutive time that Professor Hamalai has failed to honor the commission’s summons to appear in court despite being properly served.
The ICPC alleges that Professor Hamalai abused her office by requesting N12 million for a guest house rental but instead used the funds to purchase a property in Abuja’s Gwarimpa area. She is also accused of requesting N29 million for furnishing the building as a government guest house.
ICPC Prosecutor Michael Adesola informed the court that Professor Hamalai was served with the arraignment notice but was not present.
Professor Hamalai’s counsel, Olayemi Afolayan, claimed that his client was ill and therefore unable to attend. However, Justice Oba ruled that the ICPC should arrest and produce Professor Hamalai in court at the next adjourned date on September 9, 2024. CONTINUE READING
