Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Professor Itse Sagay has denounced the actions of Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo. Sagay accused Ododo of abusing his immunity by obstructing the arrest of former Governor Yahaya Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC had attempted to arrest Bello at his residence in Abuja over allegations of financial misappropriation and corruption amounting to N80.2 billion. However, Bello reportedly ignored the EFCC’s invitation and evaded arrest.
Hours after the EFCC’s siege, Ododo arrived at Bello’s residence and allegedly assisted his predecessor in escaping arrest. Sagay condemned Ododo’s actions, stating that he had abused the immunity privilege by shielding Bello from the law.
Sagay commended the EFCC officials for exercising restraint in not engaging the governor’s security team physically. He emphasized that Ododo’s actions were illegal and unconstitutional.
Sagay also advised Bello to surrender to the EFCC voluntarily to avoid humiliation. He warned that the EFCC would eventually apprehend him and that it was in his best interest to cooperate with the investigation.
Sagay cautioned Bello that by hiding, he was damaging his reputation and creating a situation where he would be humiliated. He emphasized that the EFCC would pursue him relentlessly and that it was wiser for him to surrender and defend himself. CONTINUE READING
