Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has expressed concern over the ongoing animosity between Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume. Ortom advised Alia to cease hostilities and collaborate with Akume, considering him as the “father of the state.”
Ortom warned against advisors who encourage Alia to oppose Akume, stating that such individuals are not sincere. He emphasized that all should respect the electoral outcome and unite to address pressing issues.
“Power comes from God, not from anywhere else,” Ortom said. “Both myself and the PDP candidate congratulated Governor Alia after his victory. Elections are over, and there’s no reason for further conflict.”
Ortom expressed regret over the ongoing attacks on communities by insurgents, highlighting the need for cooperation to combat this threat. He emphasized that Akume and Alia cannot succeed alone in this fight.
“With collective efforts, we can overcome this menace and bring peace to our people,” Ortom said.
Ortom reiterated his support for traditional institutions and acknowledged the challenges of governance. He urged the public to pray for the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, SGF Akume, and Governor Alia.
Ortom sought forgiveness from those he may have wronged and expressed gratitude for the support shown on his 63rd birthday. He pledged to promote unity within the state and the nation as a whole.
Dr. Bitrus Pogu, National President of the Middle Belt Forum, praised Ortom as a fearless advocate for the voiceless, particularly in his opposition to the Ruga, Cattle Colony, and Water Resources Bill.
Professor Samuel O. Aghalino of the University of Ilorin presented a lecture on “Democracy, Insecurity and the Future of one Nigeria: Reading the Mind of Samuel Ortom.”
