Abdulmutalib Jankada, the traditional ruler of Sansani Chiefdom in Taraba State’s Gassol Local Government Area, has been fatally shot.
According to sources, the ruler was targeted by unknown gunmen in his palace on Thursday night. The assailants fled after the attack, which occurred on the eve of a turbaning ceremony in the community.
Motive Suspected
The source, a close acquaintance of the deceased who requested anonymity, suspects that the killing was a reprisal by bandits. The chiefdom has been plagued by banditry and kidnapping, which Jankada actively fought against.
“He was one chief who fought the menace with all his strength,” the source said. “There have been local vigilantes arresting and punishing anyone linked to these crimes.”
Retaliation Likely
The source believes that the bandits may have retaliated against Jankada for his efforts to combat their activities. “If you attack them, they counter-attack. I suspect it was because of the way he dealt with them that they attacked back.”
Incident Details
At the time of the attack, Jankada was reportedly sitting with friends in his palace. The attackers arrived on motorcycles and sent a messenger to inform him of their presence. As Jankada stepped out to greet them, they opened fire, killing him instantly.
The incident initially went unnoticed due to the fanfare surrounding the upcoming turbaning ceremony. The town was filled with preparations and the sound of celebratory gunfire.
Investigation Launched
The Taraba State Police Command has launched an investigation into the assassination. Officers have been deployed to apprehend the perpetrators.
Other Suspicions
