The Israeli strikes come in response to Iran’s recent launch of hundreds of drones and rockets at Israel, which was largely intercepted. The Biden administration had urged Israel to de-escalate following Saturday’s attack.
President Biden has cautioned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against reckless action, emphasizing the need for careful strategy. Biden warned that the U.S. would not participate in any Israeli counter-offensive.
Iran has threatened to retaliate with nuclear weapons production if its nuclear facilities are targeted. Iranian officials have also warned of a “painful response” and the use of “weapons it has never used.”
Western nations have called for calm and de-escalation in the region. Iran’s Foreign Minister has stated that Iran will respond “immediately and at a maximum level” to any Israeli aggression.
